Super-FRS Prototype Dipole Passes Ramping Test

Dec 01, 2009

The first superconducting prototype dipole for super-FRS facility at FAIR(Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), which was developed by the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP, CAS) and the Institute of Plasma Physics (IPP), CAS, has passed the ramping test by the expert teams.

The magnetic field distribution has been measured and the measurement results meet the requirements. The great inductance of the dipole (23 H) and the relative high ramping rate bring up higher requirements for power supply and quench protection system. After innovation and upgrade of the current supply and quench protection system, the dipole was successfully ramping to 240A at the rate of 2A/s. The maximum ramping rate was up to 3A/s which is greater than the design value 2A/s. The magnet voltage and current of the ramping test are shown in the figures.
